What is love? We’ve heard it described as patient, kind, and unconditional. But let’s pause for a moment on that word—unconditional. It’s the cornerstone of true love, the kind of affection that knows no boundaries and asks for nothing in return. Unconditional love is love without conditions, limitless and unchanging. It’s been called true altruism or complete love, and while each of us may define it slightly differently, one thing is clear: it’s the purest form of love.
But what if unconditional love wasn’t just an ideal? What if it was our always?
How do we achieve this kind of love, especially in challenging times? The answer often lies in one powerful word: forgiveness. Forgiveness is the key to unlocking the door to unconditional love. It’s not easy, but it starts with the small moments—the everyday opportunities to let go of grudges and extend grace.
Imagine this: What if we chose not to sweat the small stuff with our partners, friends, or neighbors? What if, instead of reacting with anger or frustration, we made a conscious effort to forgive? “Oh, you wrecked the car? It’s okay, honey—I’m just glad you’re safe.” Or, when someone disappoints us, we could simply say, “No big deal,” and move forward with love.
Think of the world we could create if everyone mastered this practice. It’s a mindful effort, no doubt, but one that holds the potential to transform not just our relationships but our communities.
I’ll admit, unconditional love can feel like a tall order. Personally, I cherish my relationship with God, but even so, I sometimes doubt my ability to embody unconditional love. When I hear stories of people forgiving unimaginable wrongs—like harm done to their loved ones—it’s difficult for me to comprehend. I admire their strength and grace, even as I hope never to face such a test.
This season, as we celebrate love, let’s expand its meaning beyond February 14th. Let’s make it a practice—a way of life. What if we all resolved to “love thy neighbor” just a little more, not just for a day or a month, but always? Acts of kindness and unconditional love have a ripple effect, inspiring others to do the same.
What if this was the year of kindness? What if it became our new normal, continuing into forever?
Let’s not forget to Always Look Up—to seek guidance, strength, and the ability to hold unconditional love in our hearts daily. Because truly, love is the reason for the season.
